The Information Management group at Maastricht University

The Dutch Information Systems Symposium (DISS) is organized by the Information Management group in the AIM department at Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics.

About the Information Management Group

The information management (IM) group at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) is responsible for academic research and education in the field of information management. Combining expertise in the domains of accounting, business, and information systems, the group focuses on how organizations leverage information systems and technologies to enhance business operations, decision-making processes, and organizational performance.

Research Focus

The academic work of the IM group examines the impact of information technology at both organizational and individual levels. At the organizational level, the research studies the corporate governance of IT and the influence of IT investments on firm efficiency, innovation, and employment. At the individual level, scholars investigate how people make decisions regarding the adoption, usage, continued use, and discontinuation of information technology across contexts such as business, education, and entertainment. The group’s expertise extends into business process management and database management.

While embracing multiple research paradigms, the IM group primarily emphasizes empirical research leveraging both primary and secondary data. Consequently, the group has significant expertise in designing and analyzing psychometric surveys as well as performing rigorous econometric analyses of secondary datasets. Recently, the group has expanded its capabilities into textual analysis, fine-tuning, and utilizing advanced decoder and encoder models for large-scale classification and summarization tasks.

Research conducted by the IM group is often interdisciplinary, bridging the gap between technical aspects of information technology and management practice. The group’s work is published in leading academic journals in the accounting and information systems domain. Faculty members are frequently invited to present their findings at prestigious conferences and have been visiting scholars at the Wharton School, BI Norwegian Business School, the University of Florida, the University of Antwerp, Antwerp Management School, and the University of Melbourne.

Teaching and Curriculum

The IM group is involved in teaching at the bachelor’s, master’s, and postgraduate levels. Several members of the group have been recognized for their teaching excellence. Master courses are offered in three programs: MSc IB – Information Management and Business Intelligence, MSc Business Intelligence and Smart Services, and MSc Digital Business and Economics. The group also offers bachelor courses in International Business, Economics and Business Economics, Business Analytics, and Business Engineering. A flagship course such as “Management Information Systems” helps students understand how technology enables business success. The curriculum allows students to evaluate technology investments, manage IT projects, and implement effective IT strategies within organizations, complemented by hands-on learning through case studies and internships. The group also contributes to UMIO programs, including the MBA and the Executive Master of Finance and Control.

Engagement with Industry

Members of the information management group are closely connected with industry practitioners and are frequently invited to speak at company workshops. Students benefit from these connections through internships, guest lectures, and workshops that expose them to technology trends and challenges in the field of information management.
